October is not the eighth month. It is the tenth. The name means eight. It has meant eight for almost three thousand years. Nobody fixed it.
That is the calendar we inherited.
The Problem
The Gregorian calendar is a political artifact. Julius Caesar inserted July. Augustus Caesar inserted August - and stole a day from February to make his month as long as Julius’s. September, October, November, December were pushed from their correct positions and nobody renumbered them. Months have 28, 29, 30, or 31 days with no logic. Every year the weekdays shift. No two months start on the same day.
We built our entire civilisation on this. Every financial system, every scheduling tool, every legal contract. We never questioned it because we inherited it, and the cost of changing felt infinite.
But the cost of keeping it is invisible friction. Every time a developer writes a date function. Every time someone says “the third Tuesday of November.” Every time a child tries to understand why September is the ninth month.
The Mathematics
There is a better number hiding next to 365: 364.
364 = 2² × 7 × 13
It is the most divisible number near 365. It splits cleanly into weeks, months, quarters. And 28 - the month length that falls out of this - is a perfect number: 1 + 2 + 4 + 7 + 14 = 28. It is also the approximate length of the lunar cycle. These things are not coincidences. They are why calendar designers keep arriving at the same numbers.
The equation is simple:
7 days × 4 weeks × 13 months = 364 days
Add one day outside all structure - a day that belongs to no month, no week, no quarter - and you have a year. Two of them in a leap year.
The Calendar
Every month starts on Monday. Every month is identical. The 7th of any month is always a Sunday. The 14th always a Sunday. Every year, forever.

The names are seasonal, Northern European, secular. They describe what is actually happening outside. No Roman emperors. No dead gods of a seven-planet cosmology.
The extra day is called Leap - as in leaping into the new year. It lives outside the calendar. In a leap year there are two of them. Computer systems number the month 14, the week 53.
Why This Is a Society Hack
You cannot fix the calendar by yourself. But you can name your months. You can build systems that think in these terms. You can write dates as Frost 7 or 2026.13.07 and let people ask questions.
Every alternative calendar in history started as someone’s private notation. The French Revolutionary calendar lasted twelve years. The International Fixed Calendar was used by Eastman Kodak for decades. The Ethiopian calendar is still in use today.
The calendar is not physics. It is consensus. Consensus can change.
